The dragons have disappeared. All are inbirded: this kind sparrow that skips, this blackbird that takes its flight, direct descendants of gigantic fire-eaters. All birds are derived from flying dinosaurs, say scientists. Not all but good. It is among the dinos that we must look for the mythical dragons — who have existed: some still fly!
Dragons Are No Longer Scary
Flying, I don’t know. But thieves, that’s not a shadow of a doubt! This taste they have to sleep on their gold. They gather it as long as they make a pool from it to dive into it with delight, like Uncle Scrooge. Even ducks can become dragons. Didn’t they start like this? The rich will end like this. It says so. We are under the reign of the human-shaped dragons.
Western children love dragons, it’s new. In our country, dragons are scary. We confront them or flee from them. While in the East, very far towards China, Korea, Japan, everyone is crazy about these large creatures. The Dragon Festival is the most important of the year. The Dragon dance is one of them. Young and old alike love this celebration. And the zodiacal sign number one, over there, is the sign of the Dragon. Power, a great and beautiful power is associated with it. A bit like the sign of Leo here.
When my boys were little, about forty years ago, they did not particularly like dragons, but they were crazy about dinosaurs. Without suspecting for a moment that Dragons are reptilians like dinos, and that flying dinos have existed, science tells us so.
Science and Reptiles
The Upper Cretaceous pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus northropi was one of the largest known flying animals. Estimates of his height vary, but even the most conservative estimates place his wingspan at 11 metres (36 feet), with a weight of about 200 to 250 kg (440 to 550 pounds). In other words, he weighed about as much as a modern tiger, which can certainly shoot down a man or a goat.
there are snakes that “fly” in the sense that they can slide through the air over long distances. How far? Basically, these snakes can stay in the air the length of a football field or twice the length of an Olympic swimming pool! Chrysopelea asiatique spp. snakes “fly” up to 100 meters (330 feet) by flattening their bodies and twisting to optimize lift. Scientists discovered that the optimal angle for a serpentine glide is 25 degrees, with the snake’s head tilted up and the tail down.
While wingless dragons technically couldn’t fly, they could hover over a very long distance. If the animal somehow stored lighter-than-air gases, it could control flight. (source)

Science and Dragons
To date, no fire-breathing animal has been found. However, it would not be impossible for an animal to expel flames. The bombardier beetle (family Carabidae) stores hydroquinones and hydrogen peroxide in its abdomen, which it ejects when threatened. Chemicals mix in the air and undergo an exothermic chemical reaction (releasing heat), essentially spraying the offender with a hot, irritating, boiling liquid.
When you stop to think about it, living organisms constantly produce flammable and reactive compounds and catalysts. Even humans inhale more oxygen than they use. Hydrogen peroxide is a common metabolic by-product. Acids are used for digestion. Methane is a flammable by-product of digestion. Catalases improve the efficiency of chemical reactions.
A dragon could store the necessary chemicals until they are needed, expel them forcefully and ignite them chemically or mechanically. Mechanical ignition could be as simple as generating a spark by crushing piezoelectric crystals together. Piezoelectric materials, such as flammable chemicals, already exist in animals. Examples include tooth enamel and dentin, dry bone and tendons.
So, spitting fire is definitely possible. This has not been observed, but it does not mean that no species has ever developed this ability. However, it is equally likely that an organism that starts a fire will do so from its anus or a specialized structure in its mouth. (source)
Dragon’s Gold
I collected some opinions from readers to give you the scoop. Here are the best ones:
Origin of the myth
The oldest stories speak of a person who was transformed into a dragon or a snake to punish him for his extreme greed and his frenzied accumulation. And the person did not stop accumulating for all that, she wallowed on the gold that her ferocity allowed her to steal.
Contrary myth
On the contrary, in German-Celto-Norman mythology dragons are symbols of wealth and power, as in Asia where they are worshipped.
Where does the gold come from?
How do dragons gather gold from their treasure? Do they steal it by conquering kingdoms? Or do they steal merchant guilds? Or perhaps they receive tributes for not destroying the local kingdoms?
I don’t see how dragons could gather gold other than by acquiring it from human civilizations. What seems strange because they are extremely intelligent and it seems beneath them to kill and loot people for wealth.

On His Gold Still
The story of the dragon on a pile of gold comes from the Viking myth of Sigurd and Fafnir.
Dragons collect gold because power collects gold. Wealth rises to the mighty, and dragons were supernaturally powerful, gold flowed to them in supernatural quantities.
Intelligent dragons come from the Chinese myth, where dragons are celestial beings endowed with divine wisdom. With these dragons we could talk and intrigue. A Chinese myth tells how four dragons, seeing the people suffering from a severe drought, asked the Emperor to intervene to make it rain. The Emperor did not send the promised rain, the dragons assembled a cloud seedling to cause the rain. Furious to be challenged, the Emperor chained the dragons under mountains. They ridiculed him by turning into a torrent of water to become the four great rivers of China.
Dagon the Dragon
Dagon or Dagan is one of the main gods of the ancient Western Semitic populations of Syria, venerated in the Ancient Near East. He generally appears as a patriarchal and sovereign figure of the divine world, and according to an etymology of his name he is seen as the god of grain and agriculture.
And according to the language of the birds, Dagon is a dragon, period. In those days, many kings, generals, gods, emperors etc were dragons.
According to the Hebrew Bible, where he appears under the name Dagon, he is the main god of the Philistines. It is in this form that he passed on to posterity to become an evil figure in the Jewish and especially Christian tradition.
Which does not prevent either Jews or Christians from having the worship of gold…

Main Material Plan
First: the dragons were created by Ninefold Io, shortly after he created the multiverse and then the Main Material Plan. Part of what Io did in creating the dragon is to link them very closely to the primordial source of magic, called Pure Magic, from which they derive their various elemental powers. Consider each dragon’s lineage as a different key that informs the dragon how it draws from this magic, as its element and various typical behaviors; that is why dragons are so powerfully governed by their nature, not by their upbringing, because their nature is profoundly magical at its core.
Also consider that Io had just created the entire Material Plan and everything in it—except for other intelligent life forms, which were later added by other minor deities. Part of what Io probably did in this creation was to establish some basic rules for Pure Magic that he used as its divine source to shape everything, and how reality would interact with it. We can say that we know that certain materials are important for casting spells, like diamonds for resurrection spells; they are magical reagents that call upon a part of this primordial connection to magic. Gold, and many other valuables, carry this same type of connection.
The Magic Gold
Thus, dragons collect gold and other valuables because they are inherently magical, just as dragons are, and by sleeping on the loot, the dragon imbues part of its treasure with its own magic; except that instead of spending it as a spell would, the dragon stores its excess magic in the loot, a bit like a battery. And when such loot is properly established, it can amplify the dragon’s existing bloodline magic.
It is therefore not quite correct to say that the loot of a dragon can be anything. Io probably intended the dragons to collect and possess these precious magical reagents, and gave them a powerful instinct to collect such things. A dragon might choose to collect something that is not a magically active material and build a loot based on it, but it’s just an instinctive behavior; the loot won’t become magical if it’s not the right type of material, but this may nevertheless be a natural behavior of dragons.
As for what they did before the existence of other intelligent creatures, they certainly always collected these magical materials. Several types of dragons are exceptionally good for digging, and the dragons that swim could look for pearls, which are another magical material, and so on. It was the golden era of the dragon, where dragons ruled the world alone, and it was long before the separation of Io into Bahamut and Tiamat, and before the Draconic Civil War and other tragedies that happened to them. We might speculate that dragons would trade with each other, even if they were different. But there is indeed very little that was said about this time before the arrival of the other gods and the Dawn War.
Or said with slightly different words, gold literally exists for dragons to have, because that’s what Io wanted. They are the only ones to use it correctly, and it is their right—it is the younger races that are strange about it.

The Dragon in Asia
In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes wisdom, luck, and prosperity. Unlike the Western dragons, they are generally considered to be benevolent and kind. Many temples and shrines have been built to honor them. Some Chinese are called Sons of the Dragon.
According to the elders, Chinese dragons control rain, rivers, lakes and the sea. They keep away evil spirits, wandering demons, they protect the innocent and ensure everyone’s safety. The dragon gods are worshipped because they bring good business development for a store, restaurant or company.
During the Chinese New Year, many celebrations begin with a dragon dance. The purpose of dance is not only to attract attention, but also to ask a new prosperous business year from the dragon gods.
We see here how dragons are associated with gold, once again.
The Dragon Dance
The dragon dance is a form of traditional dance and spectacle of Chinese culture featuring the oriental dragon, a Chinese symbol of happiness and prosperity. Like the lion dance, it is most often practiced at parties (especially for the Chinese New Year). She is performed by a team of dancers who manipulate a long, flexible dragon figure using poles positioned at regular intervals along her body.
Oriental dragons, who are water spirits, are believed to possess among their qualities power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and bring happiness. Their appearance is frightening, but they are of benevolent disposition, and have thus come to be the emblem of imperial authority. The movements of dance traditionally symbolize this historical role of dragons as figures of power and authority. (wikipedia)
A Specific Yoga
The dragon dance is a sequence of movements, inspired by Qi Gong which is a discipline in which ‘Qi’ is translated as energy and ‘Gong’ as work, practice or culture. Qi Gong would then be a culture of vital energy. Breathing being the vital energy and movement, the way to circulate it, to cultivate it. The dragon dance is therefore also part of this intention. The goal? It is to learn, one by one, the different postures in order to link them fluidly and gracefully to embody this sequence that requires a real balance between concentration and letting go. It is said that this dance symbolizes a kind of fight that man leads towards a freer path of life. The body is in balance if it remains fluid from everywhere and if the life fire circulates.
The dragon dance stimulates and eliminates all energy blockages while mobilizing the entire body. Strength, balance, and flexibility are solicited as we go more deeply into the Dragon’s fire. (source)

In Celto-Viking mythology
the dragons are symbols of wealth and power,
as in Asia where they are worshipped.
Edenic Dragons
Moses and Aaron went to the Tent of Meeting. The two leaders go to a tent that serves as a welcome for the Most High. Why this nickname, by the way? It’s quite simple: because it is very high in the sky. Very very high. We only see a small point, but we know it’s him because of the infernal barrage and the flames of hell that roar and blush all around him. He comes, our God, he does not remain in silence. Before him is a devouring fire, around him a violent storm.
His arrival is anything but discreet. The Jews call it ‘the glory of the Most High.’ I would like to. Let’s resume. Moses and Aaron went to the Tent of Meeting and when they came out, they blessed the people. The glory of Hashem was then revealed to all the people.
But there is much worse. The sons of Aaaron wish to honor their divine dragon with incense. They took their censers, lit them, added incense; and they offered an unauthorized fire. The fire arose before Hashem and consumed them and thus they died before Hashem.
Moses then said to Aaron: “This is what Hashem spoke about when He said; among those who approach Me, I myself will show what is sacred; in the sight of all those who honor me”
End of the sequence. We pick up the charred bodies and praise the Eternal. No one is moved more than that. You saw Moses’ reaction: –Oh yes, He had warned me, it’s his thing. Respect ! (source)

The Master
In the old Christian texts — I mean neo-Christian, the Christianity of Jesus is unfindable — they spoke not of physical bodies, but of corporeal envelopes. It was the time before the dominant ego. This expression is very old, because there has been a good time that the envelope is filled with itself. All filled with ego. The body is the nest of the ego dragon.
Before the cause was atrocious. Atrocious. It was a cycle. That of life. But without excitement, evolution, decay and death. Now, now, what do you think of this? It’s coming. A big drama is coming to us. Her blood-dripping teeth, her red eyes… What am I holding? A lasso! I slap it and wrap it around his neck. And I fight against him. I FIGHT!!
I throw him to the ground. I stand up and say: Sit down, dragon! The dragon sits down and I say: Don’t move! And he doesn’t move anymore. Now he is on a leash. I’m taking him for a walk. That’s where we are for now. He obeys my orders. Then we will teach him to play dead. (source) Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master, film by Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012
The Dragon of the Ego
The Master, here, is the Dragon of the ego. His power is formidable, his strength is that of ten thousand men. No one can defeat him in single combat, if he had the strength of a hundred men, he would need that of ten thousand more. And then, it’s a miracle, here I master this dragon! Its strength is barely superior to mine, and my will is worth one hundred times his.
The dragon admits it. He has found his master with me. He places himself at my service. He obeys me in every way and constantly seeks to please me. A new danger points the nose, the inflation of my already invasive ego. I thought I was a dragon, now I think I am the king of dragons. I am their master to all. To all! And there I can very well declare war on mankind.
If one cannot get rid of the ego, and if the ego opposes enlightenment, logically it is impossible to awaken. Yet enlightenment exists. How to reconcile these two truths? Again, the middle path is the solution. I cannot kill my ego, otherwise I die. But I can keep it within limits that do not prevent awakening.
Two Christian saints fought the dragon of the ego, Georges and Michel. The latter is the only one to have defeated the dragon. But Saint Michael is not a man, he is an archangel: he can very well live without ego.
And Georges the human, didn’t he defeat the dragon? Georges did not defeat the dragon, he wounded it and put it to flight. Small detail, big difference! (source)

Awakening Killer
The ego is an awakening killer dragon, the ego is the weapon of the archons,
the cult of me-I bring that of matter.
The Dragon within us inculcates in us the cult of wealth,
desire for material power are its ammunition oh how effective.
And lethal: out of enlightenment, no salvation. You remain an animal and you die while dying.
