Our time is proud of its knowledge, but its ignorance is even greater. And his refusal of the ancient evidences is mainly due to bad faith. Like many other episodes of antiquity that the strong spirits take for myths, Atlantis is evoked by many ancient authors. The most famous of them, Plato, speaks about it in several Dialogues.
This Greek philosopher does not have the reputation of a prankster. If he has been wrong in some of his deductions, the chronicles he keeps in his Dialogues are always documented, weighted, highly credible. Also, when he mentions the fall of the island of Atlantis and lists the circumstances, we can take it seriously. “In the time of one day and one night of misfortune all the warriors you had was engulfed in one go in the ground” (source)Plato, Timeus
When Solon, the famous Greek legislator of the 7th century BC, visited the temple of Sai, the capital of Egypt, he had an exciting conversation with an old priest. First, the priest of Sais teased Solon, arguing that there were only children in Greece, because this people had no memory of the ancient events that had affected Greece, Egypt and many other countries. Like Solon 27 centuries ago, let us listen to the priest’s account.

“We keep here in writing many great deeds of your city that cause admiration, but there is one which surpasses them all in grandeur and heroism. Indeed, the written monuments indicate that your city destroyed once a huge power that walked with insolence on whole Europe and Asia, coming from another world located in the Atlantic Ocean. One could then cross this ocean; for there was an island in front of this strait which you call the columns of Heracles.”
And this gigantic island was “engulfed in one go.” To better say it has disappeared …
When Solon refers to “written monuments”, he means the texts of the pyramids and other temples in Egypt. Some have survived to the present day, but the most important ones, according to the Greek historian Herodotus, adorned the exterior of the Great Pyramid: all the history of the pre-ancient world was recorded there.
This covering is the work of Pharaoh Cheops. Although it bears his name today, Kheops did not build the Great Pyramid, he simply had it covered with smooth tiles entirely engraved, which told all the important events that occurred in Egypt, Europe, Africa, on Atlantis and on the other side of the ocean, in America.
Alas, these precious engraved slabs were torn out and then scattered. Ignorant masons have plundered them to rebuild the houses of the neighboring village. The bedephiles remember that Mortimer discovered one of these stones engraved in a wall at the sheik Abdel Razek. (source)The Mystery of the Great Pyramid, by Edgar Jacobs
Moreover, and no coincidence, after dedicating two albums to the Mystery of the Great Pyramid, the brilliant Edgar Pierre Jacobs has dedicated the following two to another closely related enigma, that of Atlantis. (source)Edgar Pierre Jacobs, The Riddle of Atlantis Reading these two works exerted on the child that I was a great influence, which shaped my destiny and the direction of my entire life.
My professional career has been mainly in comics, and now retired, I dedicate every moment to the writing of this great fresco, which owes much to both books by Jacobs. He has awakened in me the passion for myths and legends, and the certainty that these stories contain great forgotten truths.
But let’s continue the story of Plato, when Solon of Athens listens to the Egyptian priest — who was most likely black.
“This island was larger than Libya and Asia combined” says Plato (source)Plato, the Timaeus, 24d – 25d Libya and Asia, that is to say North Africa and the Middle East… which is already quite big for an island!
“From this island, one could then pass into the other islands, and from these they gain all the continent that extends in front of them and borders this true sea. For all that is below the columns of HeraclesOr the columns of Hercules, see further, constitutes only a port whose entrance is narrow, while what lies beyond it forms a true sea, and the land it surrounds really has all the attributes to be called continent.” (source)Plato, the Timaeus, 24d – 25d
This description diverges from the current geography, because it evokes a world engulfed by water. The Mediterranean Sea was smaller, and its much lower water level showed a much larger Italy and Egypt, as you will judge on the following map.
The Strait of Gibraltar was only a pass in the mountains linking today’s Spain to Morocco. To reach the Atlantic Ocean there was then only a narrow rounded gully, surmounted by two peaks, the famous Columns of Hercules today at the bottom of the waters. The passage was difficult for large ships, it could ensure long protection of Mediterranean peoples.
But when the island-continent of the Atlanteans disappeared, they had no choice but to invade the Mediterranean basin. This is the tragic episode of the Peoples of the Sea, or Pelasges, to which Plato refers in his Timaeus.
“Now, there was on the island of Atlantis a powerful confederation of kings which extended its dominion over the whole island and many other islands as well as some parts of the continent. Moreover, beyond the Columns of Hercules on our side, they were masters of the LibyeAfrika from the north to Egypt, and from Europe to Tyrrhenia.Italy One day, this power, gathering all its forces, began to subjugate your country and the north Greece and Egypt with that of all the Mediterranean peoples.” (source)Plato, the Timaeus, 24d – 25d
“It was then, Solon, that the power of your city made its value and strength shine forth in the eyes of the world. As she prevailed over all others by courage and all the arts of war, it was she who took command of the Hellenes. However, reduced to its own strength by the defection of others and thus put in the most critical situation, it defeated the invaders, raised a trophy, preserved from slavery the peoples who had not yet been enslaved. Then Athens generously returned to freedom all those who, like us, live inside the columns of Heracles.
“But in the time that followed, there were extraordinary earthquakes and floods, and within a single disastrous day and night, everything you had of fighters was swallowed up in one fell swoop into the earth, and the island of Atlantis, Having fallen into the sea, disappeared as well. That is why this sea, even today, proves impracticable and unexplorable, navigation being hindered by the muddy shallows that the island has formed as it subsides.” (same source)
This text calls for several comments. The great Atlantic island described by Plato was indeed in front of Gibraltar, which excludes a lot of locations mentioned here and there. An island in the middle of the ocean, a very large one, that cannot disappear without leaving traces. The bottom of the Atlantic has nothing but a chain of volcanic mountains, the Atlantic ridge. Geologists therefore rule out the possibility of a recent sinking of a large island in the middle of the Atlantic.
We can conclude that this island was further away from our coasts, in order to be, as Plato cites, connected by other islands to the continent which is opposite, a continent which seems to correspond to the Americas.
Or else we can conclude something completely different. For example, that Atlantis was not swallowed up. That it flew away… Yes, it can be surprising.
I became convinced that Atlantis was an artificial island, lying in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and that this island was a gigantic spaceship commanded by Atlas, son of Poseidon.
However, it turns out that the commander Atlas missed its take-off, and that a ship-island of 3000km in diameter fell back into the ocean. We understand, in this hypothesis, the extravagant height of the flood wave whose description is found in many legends on each side of the Atlantic: based on certain calculations, conversions and deductions, It can be assumed that the tsunami was no less than 4 km high. Believe without believing…
It is also possible that Captain Atlas took off his flying island a little too quickly. In which case the volume of displaced water would have caused the same kind of tsunami. What is certain, many Atlanteans have died by drowning during this episode, whatever it may be.
Others have been able to reach the shores of America. They have been living there waiting for the distant day when they could return to their country of origin, West Africa. Yorouba. Seeing them emerge armed on board their tapered boats, the Europeans panicked. The fear of these conquerors coming from the great open sea has remained anchored throughout the Mediterranean Sea, where they have been called Pelasges, or Peoples of the Sea.
From the ancient Atlantic Empire, only a few survived: Yoruba, Etruscans, Tuatha, to start a…
